Minimally invasive pain relief for chronic knee pain
At IR Wellington, we offer an advanced, minimally invasive treatment for people living with chronic knee pain caused by osteoarthritis: Geniculate Artery Embolisation (GAE). This innovative procedure can significantly reduce knee pain, improve mobility, and potentially delay or avoid the need for surgery.
What is Geniculate Artery Embolisation?
Geniculate Artery Embolisation is a non-surgical procedure performed by a specialist interventional radiologist. It targets the small arteries around the knee (called the geniculate arteries) that become inflamed in osteoarthritis and contribute to ongoing pain.
Using imaging guidance, a tiny catheter is inserted—usually through a small nick in the skin near the groin or wrist—and guided to the arteries supplying the inflamed joint. Tiny particles are then injected to reduce abnormal blood flow, helping to settle inflammation and ease pain.
Who is it for?
GAE may be a suitable option if:
- You have chronic knee pain from osteoarthritis
- Pain is not well controlled with medications, physiotherapy, or injections
- You are not ready or not suitable for knee replacement surgery
It’s particularly helpful for patients who want to reduce their pain and improve their quality of life without the long recovery time associated with surgery.
What are the benefits?
- Minimally invasive – no open surgery
- Same-day or next-day discharge
- Lower risk than surgical options
- Reduced pain and improved mobility in many patients
- Can delay or reduce the need for knee replacement
What to expect
- The procedure typically takes around 1 to 2 hours
- Most patients go home the same day
- Recovery is usually quick, with many noticing improvement in symptoms within a few weeks
- You can resume most normal activities shortly after
Is it safe?
GAE is generally well tolerated. As with any procedure, there are some risks, but serious complications are rare. Your interventional radiologist will discuss all potential risks and benefits with you during your consultation.
